Dr. John Zhonghan Deng is Chief Executive of the “China Starlight Chip Project”, Founder, Chairman and Chief Sci¬entist of Vimicro Corporation (NASDAQ:VIMC), a leading Chinese semiconductor design company that designs and develops advanced multimedia processors for PC cameras, mobile phones and others.
Dr. Deng has been recognized internationally as a premier business leader in China and a catalyst behind creative de¬sign in the country. In December of 2009, Dr. Deng was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the highest academic title in engineering science and technology in China. At 41 years old, Dr. Deng was the youngest member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He was elected a deputy to the 11th National People’s Congress.
Dr. Deng founded Vimicro in 1999 and has rapidly developed the company from a star t-up into one of China’s most innovative and respected technology companies. Under his leadership, Vimicro successfully completed its IPO on the NASDAQ Stock Market in November 2005, becoming the first Chinese semiconductor design company to be publicly listed in the United States. In December 2006, Vimicro wins the “Outstanding Financial Performance by a Public Fabless Company Award” from the Fabless Semiconductor Association. Today Vimicro, which owns more than 2000 patents, dominates the PC camera processor market with 60 percent global market share and counts leading international companies such as Samsung, Philips, Sony, HP, Logitech, Lenovo and Huawei as customers.
In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Deng has received numerous prestigious awards in both China and the U.S., including three China’s National Medals and China’s National First Class Award for Science and Technology in 2005, which were presented by the country’s President Hu Jintao. Dr. Deng was also chosen as China’s Person of the Year by China Central Television (CCTV) in 2005.
He was also recognized by the University of California as Outstanding Alumni of UC Berkeley Engineering College in 2005.
Dr. Deng received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, a M.S. degree in Economics and a M.S. degree in Physics from the University of California, Berkeley. After graduation from Berkeley, Dr. Deng worked as a research scientist for IBM at the T.J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, New York. |
