Mr. Zhang Jun, born in August 1960 in China, was appointed as the Secretary General of the Boao Forum for Asia since April 2024. He graduated from Jilin University, China with LL.B and Hull University, UK with LL.M.
After graduation, Zhang worked in the Department of International Organizations and Conferences, the General Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, serving as Deputy Director, Director, Counselor and Deputy Director General. In 2008, Zhang took the post of Ambassador of China to the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Permanent Representative of China to the OPCW till 2012. Zhang was the first Director General of Department of International Economic Affairs of MFA from 2012, then Assistant Foreign Minister from 2018 to 2019,. He attended many UN, G20, BRICS, APEC, WEF meetings as head of Chinese delegation. Zhang also served as Chinese Sous-Sherpa and then Sherpa for the G20, BRICS Affairs, Secretary General of the Preparatory Committee for the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF), and the Convener of the Advisory Council of BRF. Zhang played an important role in preparation and organization of Beijing APEC Summit in 2014, G20 Hangzhou Summit in 2016, BRICS Xiamen Summit in 2017, the First BRF in 2017 and the Second BRF in 2019. From 2019 to 2024, Zhang was appointed as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of China to UN.
From 2000 to 2002, Zhang ever took the position of Deputy Director in Administrative Committee of Ningbo Economic & Technical Development Zone, Zhejiang Province, China, and worked in General Office of the State Council from 2004 to 2008.Zhang is also a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and its Committee on Foreign Affairs.
